The SmartEdge Multi-Service Edge Routers (MSER) enable an IPTV network architecture that is unconstrained by the capabilities of a traditional data switch or edge router. With SmartEdge, an innovative, highly efficient architecture is enabled as depicted in the figure above. As with existing network architectures, the core and metro distribution networks remain unchanged. The real difference is at the IP edge, where the aggregation switch or router is supplanted by a single SmartEdge router.

The SmartEdge MSER eliminates the need for a dedicated B-RAS or separate ATM or Ethernet aggregation layer, immediately simplifying the network architecture and therefore the operational complexity. The combination of edge routing, Ethernet aggregation and subscriber management at the IP edge creates a network that is service-aware and offers a common session control point for all services. This service control point enables the service provider to introduce new services more rapidly and reduce operational expenses.
