SmartEdge 1200

Redback has created the first million subscriber rack for triple-play services such as HDTV, HD VoD and broadband mobility.  The routing innovation behind the SmartEdge platform is at the center of Ericsson efforts to deliver ‘full service broadband’.  By connecting wired and wireless networks, Ericsson will enable a world where any network can deliver any service to any Internet-enabled device.

The SmartEdge 1200 platform introduces three major innovations.  It will double carrier capacity for new video upgrades, extend triple-play services to broadband mobile networks and integrate up to six network applications into a single router.  The new network applications include deep-packet inspection for peer-to-peer traffic management, advanced session border capabilities and network security for carriers and their customers.

The SmartEdge 1200 also is compatible with the first two generations of the SmartEdge 400 and SmartEdge 800.  All three router platforms share a common operating system, line-cards and network software applications.  These innovations help establish Redback at the center of an edge routing market projected to be $9.8 billion by 2010 (Source: Yankee Group, Infonetics, Heavy Reading).

“The SmartEdge 1200 is Redback’s highest performing edge router with subscriber management, throughput and functionality that will allow carriers to ‘future-proof’ their service offerings – from today’s bandwidth throttling wire-line services to the next big wave of wireless opportunities,” said Eve Griliches, program manager of telecom equipment for IDC.

“HD video and broadband mobility are driving one of largest, multi-billion dollar routing markets in ten years,” said Kevin DeNuccio, president of Redback Networks.  “We believe the core of the network will be upgraded, and the edge of the network will be the focus of most carrier spending in the future.  We also believe more than 2 billion wireless and wireline users will be upgraded to video-centric broadband networks from 250 million broadband users today.   The SmartEdge 1200 will be at the center of most network upgrades, because Ericsson and Redback have unique expertise in both subscriber and service management.”

BROAD INDUSTRY SUPPORT

Fifteen of the top 20 telephone carriers worldwide already use the SmartEdge router platform to deliver a mix of broadband, phone and TV services to more than 50 million subscribers. Top wireline carriers deploying SmartEdge include AT&T, British Telecom, China Telecom, China Netcom, ChungHwa Telecom, eAccess (Japan), France Telecom, Korea Telecom, Telefonica, and Turk Telecom, among the more than 200 carriers deploying SmartEdge worldwide.

The first top 20 telephone carrier in the world that will use the SmartEdge 1200 is ChungHwa Telecom (CHT) of Taiwan.  Redback helps manage more than 300,000 IPTV subscribers at CHT, in addition to providing VPN and VoIP services. CHT chose the new SmartEdge platform for its network upgrade, because the SmartEdge 1200 can deliver a next generation network infrastructure to manage data, voice, and video services.

SMARTEDGE 1200: A STORY OF INNOVATION

The SmartEdge 1200 is a story of innovation and broadband harmony. If you combined the services of a broadband service provider, a phone company and a cable TV outlet, you begin to understand the type of bandwidth, subscriber management and service capacity that the SmartEdge 1200 router can deliver. It is the only router platform that can deliver any combination of triple play services and business services using a single router.  This all-in-one router flexibility introduces higher levels of broadband service harmony for carriers and their customers.  Other network vendors use up to three to five different network boxes to deliver the same combination of services as a single SmartEdge router.

The SmartEdge family of products also can dynamically bridge the gap between traditional TV and the Internet. The SmartEdge platform allows broadband users to receive any flavor of standard definition TV, HDTV and HD VoD to Internet-enabled cell phones, PCs and TVs.  The new SmartEdge platform also can extend triple-play services to broadband mobile users at future speeds from 14-144 Mbps.

INTRODUCING MEGABIT MOBILITY

The SmartEdge 1200 platform also is expected to jumpstart a new category of ‘megabit mobility’ services.  Megabit mobility can make it possible for your cable TV service to be as portable as your cell phone service.  It also can allow businesses to deliver targeted ads based on a person’s location within different network areas. Additionally, megabit mobility can give people the option to use their network to store their large video files online and play them back over any Internet-enabled device.  With megabit mobility, when your network is portable and your content is portable, too.

Redback has invested more than $400 million in its SmartEdge routing platform. The SmartEdge 1200 uses a single network box to deliver any combination of data, voice, and video services across both wireline and wireless networks. In a telecom market where industry consolidation is driving network consolidation, network economics no longer support single service routers.  What is driving multi-service routing today is directly analogous to when multiple application PCs eliminated the need for single application computer mainframes more than 25 years ago.
