Introducing Africa's First Next Generation Broadband Network; Uganda Telecom Deploys Redback Networks SmartEdge Network Platform

SAN JOSE, Calif., October 5, 2006 – Redback Networks Inc. (NASDAQ:RBAK), a leading provider of next-generation broadband networking systems, today announced that Uganda Telecom, the national incumbent telecommunications provider of Uganda, has deployed Redback’s SmartEdge® Multi-Service Edge Router to support broadband services for business and residential customers.

Uganda Telecom is the first African-based operator to migrate from a traditional circuit switched network to a converged IP-based network. This investment into broadband networking is expected to help Uganda Telecom deliver value-added services to its rapidly growing subscriber base.

“As we already use other Redback Networks products, the implementation of the SmartEdge 400 by Redback was a logical step to add intelligence to our next generation network,” said Michael Magambo, product development manager at Uganda Telecom.

The implementation of the SmartEdge 400 service capabilities enables Uganda Telecom to deliver traditional voice service as well as video and data over one single IP-based broadband network.

“Redback’s SmartEdge platform stands apart from other solutions because of its highly scalable and reliable architecture that offers differentiated quality of service for personalized service offerings,” said Marco Wanders, chief marketing officer at Redback Networks. “Uganda Telecom is now in the position to optimize their network operations and reduce their time to market for additional IP-based broadband services.”
