Belgacom Deploys Redback Networks Platform for National Interactive Digital Television Service

Belgium’s National Carrier Selects Redback’s SmartEdge Service Gateway platform for the Video-on-Demand Network Roll-out

SAN JOSE, Calif., December 13, 2005 – Redback Networks Inc. (NASDAQ: RBAK), a leading provider of next-generation IP broadband networking systems, today announced that, following extensive trials, its SmartEdge® Service Gateway has been selected by Belgacom as the platform to enable roll-out of iDTV (interactive Digital Television) Video-on-Demand service over Belgacom’s high-speed DSL network.

Since last summer, Belgacom has been making their TV over DSL service widely available. As from the start of the new season, Belgacom has secured the digital broadcasting rights for the national Jupiler Soccer League. Apart from exclusive soccer coverage and the availability of a complete suite of broadcast television channels, Belgacom TV also offers movies on demand, an interactive electronic TV guide and parental control options.

The deployment of the SmartEdge Service Gateway helps Belgacom to support higher bandwidth and advanced functions to integrate the video on demand service into the current data network. The high availability architecture of the SmartEdge product family enables Belgacom to achieve the high levels of availability required to support mission critical consumer applications. The SmartEdge platform’s support of hierarchical quality of service functions ensures a high quality and personalized user experience.

“IPTV services have captured the imagination of service providers both as a source of incremental revenue and a competitive defense against the cable companies,” said Magnus Almquist, Redback’s vice president of sales and operations for Europe, Middle-East and Africa. “We are pleased to be working with Belgacom on this exciting and innovative service offering.”
