Operationally Efficient Platform Extends Broadband Reach into the Rural Market SAN JOSE, Calif., August 30, 2005 – Redback Networks Inc. (NASDAQ: RBAK), a leading provider of next-generation broadband networking systems, today announced that Pioneer Telephone Cooperative, one of the largest telephone cooperatives in the United States, has deployed the SmartEdge® Service Gateway to deliver advanced broadband services, including fixed wireless access for roaming broadband services. “Our customers are becoming more sophisticated subscribers as new applications gain popularity,” said Steven Copeland, supervisor of network engineering for Internet services at Pioneer Telephone Cooperative. “The tiered broadband services enabled by the SmartEdge platform allow us to offer personalized services and higher value services. Operationally, the upgrade from the SMS™ was seamless with no service interruptions to our customers.” “Redback’s products are purpose built to provide personalized broadband services and increase capital and operational efficiency,” said John Spiliotis, vice president of sales and operations for the Americas at Redback Networks. “While enabling advanced broadband services, the SmartEdge platform also provides for savings in rack space, power consumption, and operations through network consolidation, resulting in more efficient operations for service providers.” Pioneer upgraded their current network which was utilizing the Redback Networks SMS broadband remote access server to enable advanced broadband services. The deployment also increased network scalability and capacity for future subscriber growth. The SmartEdge Service Gateway platform simplified Pioneer’s network provisioning and planning with its circuit creation on demand capability.
